Nunthorpe Stakes

Nunthorpe Stakes 2010

The Nunthorpe Stakes has been around for over 100 years but in the past it was just a low grade selling race to begin but became a Conditions race in 1922 and has been ever since. It is a Group One level race and carries prize money of close to £250.000

It is raced over 5 furlongs and usually attracts the top sprinters around, including two year olds as it is one of the few races that 2 year olds get to challenge their older rivals over a sprint. The last 2 year old to win was Kingsgate Native in 2007 and the oldest horse to win over the last 30 years was Bahamian Pirate in 2004.

The Robin Bastiman trained, Borderlescott has won the race for the last two yeats but in 2008 it should be remembered that the race was run at Newmarket due to the waterlogged conditions of the Knavesmire Racecourse. Top Trainers such as Bastiman, Dandy Nicholls and Jim Best are regarded as specialist sprint trainers and their entries are always worth noting.

At this stage of the betting for the 2010 Nunthorpe it is Starspangledbanner who is the clear favourite after two successive wins recently including at Royal Ascot, the Aidan O'Brien horse is a potential star and could continue his great season with a win here.
