Ebor Handicap

The Ebor Handicap

One of the highlights of the York Ebor meeting is the famous Ebor Handicap. For those that did not already know, the York Ebor Handicap is named after the shortened Roman word for York, Eboracum and was first run way back in 1943 and was called the ‘Great Ebor Handicap’. It had been originally raced over 2 miles but two furlongs were cut from the race a little later on.

Winner in 2009 was the Willie Mullins trained Sesenta who surprised everyone by winning with odds of 25/1. It is not normally a great race for favourites, with only three winning since 1991. Indeed punters will be interested to know that its the outsiders who seem to do better with two 25/1 winners in the last two years and a 100/1 winner (Mudawin) in 2006.

The odds are now shaping up for the big race at York and there are a number of horses being well backed at this stage, one interesting runner is Overturn who is coming off of an excellent win in the Galway Plate. Dirar is another one from the Galway Hurdle and he will be looking to reverse the form from that race at York.
